Stop

He says, "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10)

We leave in a fast paced world. Everything around us speeding by faster and faster each day. Life has become a whirlwind swirling around us. Everything coming at us fast. Fast food, fast news, short texts, emails. Fast, fast, fast. Even our time with God is fast. Five minute devotionals, one minute prayers. God forbid the preacher go longer than 20-30 minutes. In all of our rushiing we tend to miss God. We lose the ability to know Him. The one who created us in His image is a distant thought, crowded out by all the things quickly coming at us. We tend to not sit still for very long. Our minds race, even when we are trying to rest. Society has created an environment that draws us away from God. 

Many times in the Bible we are instructed to be still, and let God do His thing. However, many times we get in His way. We want things now. We don't want to wait. So we take things into our own hands and we run as fast as we can to make our own way. We move when we should be still. What we need to do is sit at the feet of Jesus. Martha sat at His feet, while her sister Mary rushed around taking care of everyone and everything. Marhta got more out of the interaction than Mary did. Why? Because shs was being still. She took the time to experience Jesus and learn more about Him. 

If we truly want to know God we must be still. We must be willing to spend more time in His Word. More time in prayer. How do we get to know someone? We spend time with them. God is no different. If I asked you to tell me about your best friend, you would probably have no problem telling me things about them. The things you do together, conversation you had, and expereiences you shared. You would probably be able to tell me things you have in common. What if I asked you about Jesus? What would you be able to tell me? What are your expereinces? What do you have in common? What things have you do together? 

God is instructing us to be still, and know that He is God. God wants us to know Him. God wants us to expereince Him. But we must be still to do so. We must break from our fast paced life long enough to sit before God and get to know Him. Being still is crucial to knowing God. May we find time in our day to sit still be God.
