There is much controversy surrounding the Bible and the AA Big Book, and I realize I am interjecting my thoughts, interpretation, and beliefs into this discussion. I also realize that many will disagree with my opinion. That’s alright. I respect differing opinions. In reading through the AA Big Book I have found things that point to at least some connection between the Bible and the AA Big Book. I was redeemed from the life of alcoholism 32 years ago. I have witnessed the relapse of those who have entered recovery. Many of these relapses came after many years of sobriety. When we lose sight of the divine, we tend to lose our way. Keeping the main things in focus is key to success.

There are things in the universe we can’t explain. No matter how hard we try we can’t wrap our minds around it. Some things we’ll never know about this side of heaven. Addiction is described as baffling. It can be hard to wrap our minds around it. Many people who have never struggled with addiction may think the addict can just stop if they want to. However, it’s not that simple. My wife and I watch On Patrol Live and on a recent show a man was arrested after entering a garage without permission. This man was on the show a week earlier. He was found in an alley unresponsive from an overdose. He nearly died from the overdose, yet here he was one week later high and going to jail. Addiction is baffling.

God Can

Authentic change doesn’t come from within us. We tried hard to overcome our addiction. We tried everything humanly possible, but were unable to end the madness. I spent several years trying to stop but always returned to the bottle. I could go a week or two without drinking, but then the disease would convince me that I didn’t have a problem. I would believe the lie that since I was able to go that long without drinking, I must not be an alcoholic. So, I would return to drinking, even in light of all the troubles it was causing. Divorce, three DUI arrests, financial trouble, and relationship problems. I was fortunate to have a friend to reach out to. She agreed to meet with me. To my surprise she showed up with the pastor of her church. I can’t remember how long we sat there talking. Eventually the conversation turned to Jesus, and I turned my life and my will over to Him. That was my first day of freedom and nearly 33 years later I am still free.
