Breaking the Rules

Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so You are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. (Psalm 51:4)

No one is perfect. As much as my perfectionist mindset wants to be perfect I cannot achieve perfect. Neither can anyone else on earth, Jesus is the only person to ever walk this earth. He was tempted in every way but never sinned. We, on the other hand, sin. Even when we try to be perfect we sin. It’s what we do as humans. Adam introduced sin into the world all the way back in Eden. Sin has been a part of the human race ever since. 

The issue isn’t if we sin. The issue is the recognition of who we sin against. Our sin isn’t against our fellow earthly residence. We don’t sin against our parents, our spouse, our children, or anyone else. Our sin is against God and God only. We have violated the laws of God. God sets the rules so when we break the rules we break His rules, not necessarily the rules of this world. We need to properly identify who we sin against. We need to remember that it is God we sin against. No one else, just God. We should be more concerned with offending God then we are with offending those around us. We sin, not against the world, but against God. Because we sin against God, we are subject to punishment. God is our Judge, not the world. God has every right to render a verdict against us. He is justified in handing down judgment. We tend to fear the judgment of those around us more than we do God’s judgment. 

God has set the rules. He is the one we sin against. God in His perfect nature is offended by our sin. Let us shift our focus to Him and recognize that our sin is against Him and no one else.
