God created the heavens and the earth, and all that is in it. We can learn some important lessons from reading the first chapter of Genesis. God had a plan for how He would create everything and His plan was carried out in perfection. Each day completed a task that was significant for the tasks of the next. The sequential steps of creation progressed ending on the sixth day when God created humans. This way the closing of what God said was good.
The thing we need to see in the first chapter of Genesis is that at the close of the first five days God looked at His work and declared it as “good.” God was happy with His work and was satisfied with how it turned out. In these five days God had set up creation from His final task of creating everything. On the sixth day God created humans. “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). The crown of creation. Humans are created in the image of God, created in HIs likeness. God could have created all things in any order He wanted to, but He chose the best for last. At the end of the previous five days God declared His work “good.” However, at the end of the sixth day He declared it “very good.” “God saw all that He had made and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning - the sixth day.” (Genesis 1:31).
Why is this significant? It places a high value on us. “We are of supreme value to God. He created us in His own image, which means that we all have the stamp of God’s being in us.” (NIV Recovery Devotional Bible). God created us in His image. This is different from all the rest of creation. In the first five days God created everything by speaking them into existence. However, one the sixth day He did something different. “The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7). God did use words to create humans. He used His own hands. God got down in the dust of the ground and made humans. This is much more personal than merely speaking something into existence. Not only did God form us with His hands, He breathed His own breath into us. How personal is that? God’s own breath is what brought life to humans.
God has placed a high value on us. So high of a value that He would sacrifice His only Son, Jesus, so that we could have forgiveness of sin, and be reconciled to Him. The creation story speaks to the value God places on us. I pray that you will find your value in God, not other humans.
