Solomon, the son of king David, is known as the wisest person to ever exist. God blessed him with wisdom that surpassed all others. The book of Ecclesiastes is credited to him. The book of Ecclesiastes claims that everything is meaningless. Solomon states right from the beginning, “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2). The wisest human to ever grace planet earth says that everything is meaningless. Meaningless describes something that lacks significance, purpose, value, or logical sense.
Life isn’t meaningless, the things of this world are. Our life has meaning. However, the things we accumulate don’t. Our life is the most valuable possession we have. Our life is significant and has purpose. And yet we place more value on material things than life. We hurry through life accumulating as many things as we can. Many people feel significant based on what they have. Expensive cars, houses, and the latest gadgets. But all of this is meaningless. The things we have don’t define who we are. It’s sad that many people struggle with their identity when all the things are gone. Why? Because life is defined by the meaningful things of this world. We can have all the newest things, and millions of dollars, but it all is meaningless. Who, once they leave planet earth, gets to take it with them. No one! All the things we accumulate stays here. It goes to someone else to enjoy. And yet, we find it important to accumulate stuff, and place our jobs and possessions higher than life.
There was a point in my life where I chased after things. Confession, I still do at times. But I’m better today. It’s not the number one thing in my life. So, the question is, if everything is meaningless, what’s the point of life? The point in life is our relationship with Jesus. We were created by God to be in relationship with Him. If you have ever wondered about the purpose of life, read that last sentence again. Our purpose is to be in relationship with God. That’s why we were put on earth. Our significance is found in Jesus, not in the stuff we have. Our value is in Jesus, not in our relationships with others. We need relationships with other people, but they are not the most important relationship we have. That belongs to Jesus.
We struggle through life because we place meaning on meaningless things. Our value is based on things that won’t last forever. We will find what is meaningful when we place our trust in Jesus. When we follow Him we’ll find the meaning of life. Life does have meaning, just not in the things of this world.
