Where's Your Treasure?

We live in a materialistic world chasing after things that we think will make life better. We invest in a house, car, stock markets, and many other things. None of these things are bad. They can have a positive impact on our lives. The problem is when these things become idols. They become the treasure in our life. Things that we could lose at any time. But there is a much better treasure to seek, and we have a choice to make regarding where our treasure is. Here’s the question we need to be asking ourselves. Is our treasure here on earth or in heaven? It cannot be in both places. It’s one or the other.

In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus speaks about where our treasure is and says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21). So it matters where our treasure is. On earth or heaven? But what treasures are in heaven? Let’s start with the kingdom of God. We are to treasure the kingdom of God over kingdom earth. Our focus should be on following God’s will, not our own. To seek the kingdom of God is to make God’s priorities our priorities. We give up our selfish desires for the desires of God. When this happens we are putting our treasures in heaven. Our heart will be in the kingdom of God.

The greatest treasure of all is Jesus, who sits at the right hand of God. When our treasure is in becoming more like Jesus, our heart will be in heaven. No one can take our treasure from us if it is in the right place. Fire may burn our house down. An auto accident may total our car. The stock market might crash. Thieves may break into our house and steal our earthly treasures. However, no one can steal Jesus from you. No one can take away the treasures we store up in heaven. We may have concerns that something will happen to our earthly treasures, but we don’t have to worry about the treasures we have in heaven. Unlike earthly treasures they are secure. When our treasure is Jesus, our treasure is in heaven.
