“If it feels good, do it.” “Just do it!” These are phrases that were popular at one time. I believe they are phrases that have great potential for drawing us into a worldly mindset. They tell us that we can do whatever we want. If it makes us feel good we should just do it. I am of the opinion that phrases like these contribute to the decay of morality in our society and in our lives. As we look around at society we can find plenty of evidence of their negative impact. Phrases like these reject God and place ourselves on the throne of our lives.
The apostle Paul wrote, “Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done” (Romans 1:28). The knowledge of God is built into HIs creation and revealed even more in the short life of Jesus. We are without excuse in regard to knowledge of God. Humans are created in the image of God, so knowledge about Him is built into our being. The problem isn’t a lack of knowledge, it’s not thinking the knowledge of God is worthwhile to retain. Without retaining the knowledge of God, things go awry. Paul tells us that “God gave them over to a depraved mind.” A depraved mind is morally corrupt, wicked, or deeply perverted. We don’t even have to look deep into society to find depravity. It is there, in the open. Men thinking they are women, women thinking they are men. Unnature sexual acts. Even hetrosexual people have unnatural sexual acts. Murder, mass shooting, assaults, slander, corruption are just a few of the results of a depraved mind.
Because God has given people over to a depraved mind, they do the things they shouldn’t be doing. The phrases I mentioned above are lies. They are lies from our enemy, Satan, who wants us to turn our backs on God. They are lies we must resist. God has proved us with a knowledge of Himself, but He doesn’t force us to retain it. The choice is ours to make. We will either retain the knowledge of God or not. The depravity we find in our society is the result of individuals choosing not to retain the knowledge of God. This is not God’s plan for the people He created in HIs image. However, it is the plan of Satan, who wants to kill, steal, and destroy. We must retain the knowledge of God. We need to do the things necessary to increase our knowledge of God. We live in a time where depravity is all around us. The God news is that God hasn’t given up on His creation, at least not yet. May we seek Him while He can be found.
