The power for genuine change isn’t found in anything this world has to offer. The 12-Steps are helpful in achieving lasting change. Therapy is a wonderful tool for exploring and healing our brokenness. But it’s Jesus who can restore our sanity. He is the one who has the power to take an old alcoholic and redeem him. It is the power of Jesus that took me out of bondage to a bottle and set my feet on a path to sanity. My journey began on September 16, 1993 and Jesus has never let me down. He has displayed His power in my life and there is more power than I can imagine.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “Now to Him who is able to do more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” (Ephesians 3:20). Paul recognized the power of Jesus. After all he had seen and experienced in his service to Jesus, he realized there was even more power than he had experienced. Paul experienced shipwrecks, beatings, stoning, and prison time. Jesus had helped him through it all and yet he states there is more power than he could ask for or imagine.
“And his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 1:19-20). Paul informs us that the power of God, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, is available to those who believe in Jesus. When we believe in God as our Higher Power, we gain all the power we need to overcome our addiction. This power is so great that it can raise the dead. This power isn’t found in ourselves or the world. But in the power of God that is inside us. All we need to do is believe in Jesus and power more than we ask for or can imagine is given to us. Through this power we are restored to sanity.
