What is your opinion of a power greater than yourself? People will answer this question based on their concept of who God is. No other power is greater. A power greater than ourselves cannot be greater than the power that is responsible for creating all things. A "higher power" is any spiritual, universal, or abstract force greater than oneself that provides guidance, purpose, or support. While it often refers to a traditional deity (like God), it can also represent non-religious concepts like nature, the universe, love, or the collective strength of a support group.God is the ultimate greater power. Any other greater power will eventually let you down.
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26). The doctor was right. If the addict is going to re-create their lives it’ll take much more than what we have to offer. However, God can use what we have to re-create our lives. True recovery is holistic. It has physical, mental, and spiritual components, and all three must be dealt with for lasting recovery to take place. Neglect one of the three and the chances of relapse increase. I struggled with alcoholism for many years. I tried AA meetings, I read the Big Book, and I tried working through the steps, but I continued the insanity of drinking. Three DUIs and broken relationships, but I was still actively drinking. It wasn’t until Jesus became my Higher Power that I was able to stop the insanity and re-create my life. I didn’t stop working the 12-Steps, but Jesus made the Steps make sense.
We need much more than willpower to overcome our addictions. Self determination won’t get it done. Self reliance won’t gain us sobriety. A power greater than ourselves will provide us with the things we need to re-create our lives. Not life as we want it, but life the way God wants it. With God all things are possible. 32 plus years ago God did the impossible when He broke the chains of alcoholism that held this alcoholic prisoner. The chains fell off, the prison door flew open and I walked out a free man. What was impossible for me to do on my own, God made possible. The wise doctor provided us with words that can have a huge impact on our lives. We can’t truly beat our addiction, no matter what it is, on our own. A higher power is needed. Jesus is the Power greater than ourselves that can make it possible to re-create our lives. With Jesus, the impossible becomes possible.
