Artificial Intelligence, fake news, biased news reporting, cosmetic surgery, and scams fill our society. It seems there are few things in society that are true. Yet, we all seek what is true about the world around us. Part of the anxiety problem in our society is caused by not knowing what is true. Anxiety rises when truth is hard to find. Anxiety is caused, in part, by not knowing what is true. It is fueled by fear. Fear of not knowing. When the truth is hard to find, we get anxious about the future. In Philippians 4:8, the apostle Paul provides us with a list of things we should be focusing on to help relieve our anxiety. The first thing on the list is to focus on what is true.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32). Where there is truth, there is freedom. Freedom from anxiety and many other things we struggle with. The problem is we have lost the ability to know what is true. Our society has become one that makes finding what is true difficult. But if we want freedom, we must find what is true. “True” means being in agreement with fact, reality, or actual conditions rather than being false or copied. It also describes something genuine, loyal, or correctly aligned and positioned. There are many things in our society that do not agree with facts. People living a life that doesn’t align with reality. In order to address our anxiety we need to focus on what is true. But how do we find truth in a fake society? We turn to the Creator of all things. When we seek God we find what is true. God today is the same as He was when He Created all things, and will be the same tomorrow. Truth is found in Him.
When we find what is true, we find freedom. Nothing that God has created is a mistake. Thus everything God created is true, just as He created it. We can’t take away from it, we can’t add to it, and we can’t change it. So to find what is true we measure things with God’s Word. If we seek God we will find Him and when we find God, we find what is true. The Bible is our guide to finding what is true. The more we know God, the more we will be able to identify what is true. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33). One of the things added when we seek God’s kingdom is truth. Our anxiety is fueled by fear and many times our fear is based on false belief. Our weapon against false beliefs is truth. We must make the effort to search out what is true. What is true is found in God. The truth is out there and we must seek it. Truth isn’t always evident in our society. However, truth is always found in God. “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
