Depression is a dark place. Depression is a serious mood disorder characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest, and a lack of energy. It is a medical condition that affects how you feel, think, and behave, rather than a personal weakness. Depression does not have a single cause; it typically stems from a complex mix of biological, genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Traumatic events, chronic stress, family history, and physical illnesses can all act as triggers. In the United States, roughly 18.3% of adults currently experience depression or receive treatment for it, while about 28.5% of Americans report having been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lifetime. So, if you struggle with depression, you are not alone.
I am one of the 18.3%. I know the struggle with depression, and along with it comes anxiety. Many times these to are married to each other. For someone who doesn't struggle with depression it can be hard to understand someone who does. The old saying, "pull yourself up by your boot straps" and "just think positive" don't work for someone in the throws of depression. Depression is a tormentor of the soul. However, relief can be found. The only cure is divine intervention. A miracle of God is the only way to rid ourselves from our depression. But even if the miracle doesn't come, the depressed individual can gain a sense of a somewhat normal life.
If you think you are struggling with depression I encourage you to speak with a medical professional. Seek the assistance of a therapist. Mental health issues aren't a sign of weakness. In fact, some of the strongest people I know struggle with mental health issues. Some key people in the Bible struggled with depression, as well as some of the great theologians, past and present. So, if you are a follower of Jesus and struggle with depression it's not necessarily tied to your faith or some sin in your life. So let's begin our journey. I hope we can learn together.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself, plaese call someone for help. Jesus loves you and has a purpose for your life. Reach out to someone who can help.
