Glory

Can glory being placed in the wrong direction contribute to our depression? We all want glory and honor and power, but what if we don’t receive it? Or what if we do but we discover it isn’t satisfying? I believe that when we seek glory and honor and power from people we set ourselves up for disappointment, which can lead to depression. Glory and honor and power doesn’t promise us satisfaction. Once we realize it isn’t satisfying our mood is depressed. However, we continue to seek these things. People do not have the ability to provide us with lasting satisfaction. If we are honest we will agree that there is only one who is worthy of all glory and honor, and power.

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being.” (Revelation 4:11). God is worthy of glory and honor and power. When we recognize and place these where they belong we will find satisfaction. We are not God. I know this might be tough for some people to hear, but it’s true. But why we give up on receiving them for ourselves we will begin to find satisfaction. People might bring you satisfaction but if we wait long enough you will be disappointed. We were not created to be God. We were created in His image, but equal to Him. God is above us. That will never change. As the writer of Revelation tells us, God is worthy of glory and honor and power. When glory and honor and power is properly placed our spirit will be awakened and start to come alive, which will lift our spirit and decrease our depression.

I’m not telling you that your depression will be gone. What I’m saying is that we can benefit from placing glory in the one who Created all things. Chasing after glory for ourselves is going to eventually bring us to a place of despair. Honor is illusive, especially when we seek it from others. Power is something most people never experience. God already has glory and honor and power, and He always will have it. Recognizing this can be life changing. As a redeemed alcoholic I didn’t have the power to stop drinking, but God does have the power I need. God has all the power. God is the only one who is truly worthy of glory and honor and power.
