Jesus As God

There are some things about God that challenge our finite minds. Things that, no matter how hard we try, we just can’t wrap our minds around. These are the times when faith is important. You might say but I just can’t believe that. Or, I need to be able to understand before I believe it. But yet you believe in other things you don’t fully understand. You may not understand how a computer works, but you believe it will be useful. You may not understand how a mobile phone works but you carry it everywhere you go, even the bathroom. But yet you may not believe certain things about God so you don’t believe or accept them by faith. 

One of the things you might struggle with is Jesus as God. Yes, Jesus, the Son of God, is God. Don’t stop reading because the claim that Jesus is God isn’t my creation. The Bible gives us evidence to this truth. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:1-3). The Gospel of John starts with this proclamation about Jesus. Jesus is the Word that was with God during creation, and in fact is God. Genesis 1:26 says, “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” So who is “us” and “our?” It’s Jesus. Jesus has always been with God. He has always been God. This is what John is telling us in the first three verses of his gospel. John wants us to understand that Jesus is God.

John later writes, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14). I’m not going to tell you that I understand how this could be possible. I don’t. But what I know is that God is much more than my finite mind can comprehend. So, by faith I believe. God dressed Himself in human flesh and lived among humanity. He ate, drank, slept, cried, and laughed. He did everything humans do, except sin. If we examine the life of Jesus we will see the nature of God. We can learn about God by learning about Jesus. John says we see God’s glory in Jesus. We can also see God’s grace and truth, all reflected in the life of Jesus. Jesus wasn’t just a good man. He wasn’t just an excellent teacher. He was God in human flesh.
