Faithful means being firm, loyal, and steady in your support, affection, or duty to a person, promise, or belief. There are few people we find who are faithful. In a world full of corruption, greed, and fake news we can sometimes feel we have no where to turn to. We struggle with finding anyone we can put our faith in. Most everything is suspect and we question many things. Distrust is rampant in society. Yet, we strive for someone we know is faithful. Someone we can rely on. Unfortunately there are few choices in the world. However, there is someone who is faithful. Deuteronomy 7:9 says, “He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He.”
The most faithful person is God. There is no one like Him. We see several things about God in Deuteronomy 7:9. The writer starts with God as a rock. Rocks are solid. So we see God as being solid. He is set firm in who He is. Because of this we can trust Him. We can know that He never loses His solid commitment to what He has created. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” God doesn’t change. The God who rescued me from alcohol, rescues me today, and will rescue me tomorrow. God’s ways are perfect. Because they are perfect we can trust them. As flawed people our ways are flawed. This isn’t the case with God. God’s creation was perfect. That is until humans decided to rebel against God and disobey Him. God’s ways are just. Because of this He could not allow rebellious people to go without consequences. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, death and destruction entered the world.
God doesn’t do anything against who He is. Because He is solid like a rock, is perfect in all His ways, and is just, He does no wrong. Now that is faithful. God is upright, meaning He has an honest moral character. Remember, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His character never changes, and it never will. Because of His unwavering character He is just. If He wasn’t He would be out of character. God is faithful. He is someone we can trust. Yes, there are struggles in this life. But there is also a solid Rock we can anchor to steady us in the storms. God is our Rock. In a world where faithfulness is hard to find, we can find God. We can anchor our lives in God. We can seek God’s ways, which are perfect, and not our own. We can stop chasing after people and start drawing near to a solid, perfect and just God who is faithful in all His ways.
