Do you find it difficult to find God? Do you question His existence? There are times when it can feel like God is far off, that He has forgotten about us and He doesn’t care about what happens to us. We are struggling through life and our future looks bleak. Our hope may even be slipping further into a pit of darkness. We think, or maybe say out loud, “God, where are you?” Our questions about God seem to go unanswered. But God has promised us that He will never leave us, or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). God is faithful and keeps His promises. So why can’t we find God? The correct answer to this question is, we can.
Jeremiah 29:13 tells us, “You will seek and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.” Finding God isn’t a half-hearted effort. We can’t find God when our heart is somewhere else. We may be seeking God through knowledge, which can point us toward Him. But knowledge only leads us to knowing about God. God wants more than knowledge about Him. He wants us to desire Him more than anything in our life, more than anything this world has to offer us. God wants us to seek Him with all our heart. When our knowledge about God is transferred to our heart, we will find God. Seeking God with our whole heart is much more than knowing information about who God is. Finding God is a heart issue. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God has a wonderful plan of prosperity and protection. They key that unlocks this plan is seeking Him with all our heart.
God’s promise is that we will find Him if we seek Him with all our heart. So, we must examine our ways of seeking God. Yes, we find God in His Word (Bible), through meditating on Scripture, and prayer. However, a half-hearted effort in one or all of these will have an impact on finding Him. God wants to be the most important part of our lives. He wants our heart to be committed to Him. So, the question is, who or what are we seeking more than we seek God? Is money more important? What about human relationships? Material possessions, status or being accepted by others? None of these can be more important than God. If we seek these things more than we seek God, it will be difficult to find Him. So when we set out on our journey to find God, we must determine to seek Him with all our heart. God is faithful in keeping His promises, and He has promised that we will find Him when we seek Him with all our heart. When we place God first in our life, we will find Him.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33).
